Now we protect more than 3,000 children

Ever more mosquito nets distributed

Siblings sleep in "tents"

More than 3,000 children in Kenya, who previously risked malaria, can now sleep safely. The appeal in the previous issue of News from the Rotary Doctor Bank received a great response, and the Doctor Bank jeep-doctors oversee the distribution of ever more nets. These nets are so large that they are sometimes called "tents", because several siblings can sleep in one when fitted in a hut. However, the nets must be maintained, and preferably impregnated every six months. This requires education, which in time locally trained "health workers" will provide.

"Water for Life" bottles are at the same time handed out, to "sun-purify" water that is often polluted.

Education is needed here as well, something the Doctor Bank invests more in as the resources grow. - Read more about Water for Life on page 4.

Sälens Rotary Club first champion!

The bottle on the front page of News from the Rotary Doctor Bank, issue 4 1999, was filled with one million Swedish Crowns on 27 March this year! In the championship for Rotary clubs, Sälen RC won with no less than 2,240 Crowns per member, while Marks RC tipped to win came second.

Sälens RC may now select a club member, who can along with "better half" study the Doctor Bank activities in Kenya. It is planned that Dr Claude Laurent, ear specialist from Umeå, Sweden, with great experience of Doctor Bank work, will supervise this.

The results surpassed expectations, and the Rotary Doctor Bank board has decided to reward 10 clubs in addition to the winner. Each will receive a work of art donated by the artist Per-Olof Olsson, Helsingborg-Kärnana RC. The ranking by contributions per member is:

First Chapionship
1) Sälen 2240 SEK
2) Mark 1846.
3) Mölndal-Fässberg 1400
4) Eskilstuna-Rekarne 769
5) Nässjö Högland 543
6) Vårgårda Herrljunga 536
7) Kalmar Norra 454
8) Orust 395
9) Skövde Billingen 373
10) Karlstad Hybelejen 222
11) Sunne 204

New round in championship

On 28 March this year started a new round in the Doctor Bank Championship for Rotary clubs, where the winner may select a member, who along with partner can accompany a Doctor Bank doctor and study the work in an African country. The bottle now contains 147,000 Swedish Crowns. Good luck! And remember to always have a real collection bottle for the Doctor Bank Allowance, both at home and in the club.
