A grant from the Rotary Foundation allows the Doctor Bank to get more wells at the jeep-doctor clinics. 25,000 Crown (about USD 2,900) donations from the Lund Dalby and Värnamo Apladalen Rotary clubs made another two wells possible. In addition, five more wells are ready thanks to donations from just as many Rotary clubs. Fund raising for wells is in progress in several more clubs, such as Kungsbacka, and more are welcome to help people with clean drinking water: Water for Life.
Can a Rotary Club get its "own" doctors? The answer is YES! The Inner Wheel earlier got its "own" doctor and now the Eskilstuna Rekarne RC will receive two after donating 50,000 Crowns (USD 5800) to the Doctor Bank. These will be gynaecologist Francis Kamwendo and orthopaedic surgeon Urban James, who both go out this spring and will when they return, come to "their" club and talk.
As always, the Doctor Bank doctors work without pay, receiving only compensation for travel and lodging.
Dr Marianne Ekberg, from Hyssna, Sweden, is one of the Doctor Bank's very ambitious jeep-doctors. Recently she worked as GP on the island of Pemba together with gynaecologist Margareta Piper, from Huddinge. In her report, she takes up the question of whether Nordic doctors are too ambitious.
"One must remember that we work under Tanzanian conditions and must respect religion, politics and local customs. It is also important for each doctor to remember that our work focuses on aid to helping oneself. We Nordic doctors are in general very ambitious and easily take over all responsibility. I mean that we should mainly be a support: mostly educate and let the local personnel come forward. To win their trust, they must feel that we respect them."
